Hydraulic Hybrid

In the search for more efficient means of powering motor vehicles, hybrids are, as the accompanying article states, the current rage. By definition, hybrids are Hydraulic Hybrid cross-breeds which rely on two distinct sources of energy to power a vehicle. In most cases, these are internal combustion and electricity. Internal combustion engine stores its energy in fuel carried on board. Electric motors store their energy in batteries which are also carried on board. These energy stores are called upon, either separately or in unison, to drive the vehicle. Everyone knows the evils of petroleum-based fuels. But batteries also have a considerable amount of environmental baggage and are likely to fall from favour as soon as the green generation catches on.

Replacing batteries and eliminating the heavy-duty chemistry by some other means of energy storage is the next big thing. The Hydraulic Hybrid is one such system. It has its limitations but is still an interesting and environmentally positive aternative. The article appeared in a recent issue of DPN News.
